What is Flutamide?
Flutamide is an anti-androgen drug which is used to treat prostate cancer in combination with other medications. It is not made for use in women. Flutamide is sold under several trade names, some of which are Drogenil, Cytomid (manufactured by Cipla).
Flutamide medication functions by hindering the antigen activity in the prostate gland in men, which inhibits tumor growth and also shrinks the tumor.
Flutamide is an anti-androgen. It works by interfering with antigen activity in the prostate, which stops tumor growth and allows the tumor to shrink.
Important Information about Flutamide
Strictly avoid taking Flutamide medication (Drogenil, Cytomid) if you are allergic to its active ingredient Flutamide or any other ingredient, if you are female, or if you are suffering from a severe liver disease. Flutamide has been observed in rare cases to cause extensive liver damage leading to hospitalization or death. Immediately seek medical attention if you experience these symptoms while taking Flutamide: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, appetite loss, symptoms of flu, yellow skin or eyes, itching, clay colored stools, or dark urine. These effects may signal early liver damage which if left untreated may lead to more severe liver damage.
Flutamide intake may lead to diarrhea. Do not take laxatives on top of Flutamide medication, unless or otherwise directed by your doctor. If you do get diarrhea, consult your doctor or pharmacist to give you some medication for it.
While taking Flutamide, you may be required lab tests frequently to monitor your liver function and check whether there are any side effects or not. Do not miss any doctor or lab appointments. Do not stop taking this medication without your doctorâ€™s advice.
Flutamide is not recommended for use in children.
Before taking Flutamide
Before taking Flutamide medication (Drogenil, Cytomid), take care of all precautions mentioned above. Discuss about the points mentioned above with your doctor for safe usage of this medication.
Let your doctor know beforehand if you have these conditions: liver diseases, if you smoke, have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency or have hemoglobin M deficiency. In case you have any of the cases thus mentioned, your doctor may or may not recommend Flutamide to you. Even if he recommends, then your dosage may be different than the usual one and you may be required frequent checkups so that your progress can be closely monitored.
How should I take Flutamide?
Take Flutamide medication (Drogenil, Cytomid) strictly as prescribed by your doctor and no changes whatsoever must be made to it without his or her advice.
Flutamide is normally taken three times a day 8 hours apart. Follow your doctorâ€™s advice carefully. Take each dose with a glass of water.
Take flutamide exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain them to you.
Always store Flutamide medication in a cool and dry place, away from heat and moisture. Ensure that children and pets Do not have access to Flutamide or any other medications.
What happens if I miss a dose of Flutamide?
Do not miss a dose of Flutamide unnecessarily. But if you do miss a dose for some reasons, take it as soon as your remember it. However, forget about the missed dose if the time for the next dose is near. Do not take multiple doses close to each other to compensate for the missed dose as that will lead to extra medicine in your body at one time (overdose) which can be dangerous.
What if I overdose?
If you overdose on Flutamide, you may experience these symptoms: slow breathing, dizziness, decreased activity, watery eyes, raised body hair, suppressed appetite, vomiting, or sedation. Get immediate medical attention in case of an overdose or call the Doctor immediately.
Things to avoid while taking Flutamide
Remember to follow any diet, medicine, or activity restriction which your doctor may have advised while taking Flutamide.
Flutamide Side Effects
Contact your doctor immediately or seek urgent medical help if you experience these serious allergic reactions due to Flutamide: breathing difficulty, swelling on face, lips, tongue, or throat; or skin hives.
Flutamide (Drogenil, Cytomid) can lead to extensive liver damage leading to hospitalization or death. Immediately seek medical attention if you experience these symptoms while taking Flutamide: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, appetite loss, symptoms of flu, yellow skin or eyes, itching, clay colored stools, or dark urine.
Some other less severe side effects of Flutamide which have been observed over time are diarrhea, skin rash, increased sensitivity to sunlight, lower libido, impotence, decreased sperm count, rectal bleeding or inflammation, bloody urine, or amber or greenish urine.
These lists of side effects are non exhaustive and there may be other side effects. Seek medical help if you witness any other severe side effects.
Flutamide Dosing Information
The normal dosage of Flutamide is pegged at a total of 750mg per day. It is taken as 250mg tablets thrice per day at 8 hours gap. Your dosage may change for reasons already mentioned above. Always follow what your doctor has prescribed.
Interaction with other drugs
Other drugs may interact with Flutamide (Drogenil, Cytomid) so before taking it, share your list of any present medications with your doctor. Some medications like a blood thinner such as warfarin may interact with Flutamide to cause bleeding.
